Averett University’s History


Averett University was chartered in 1859 as Union Female College and became affiliated with the Baptist General Association of Virginia in 1910. The institution was named Averett College in 1917 when it received accreditation as a junior college. The Southern Virginia adult school became a coeducational four-year college in 1969 and offered its first graduate programs in the 1980s. The school was finally named Averett University in 2001 and began offering bachelor's and master’s degrees in a variety of fields.

Averett University in Southern Virginia offers adult students a number of advanced courses leading to accredited bachelor's and master's degrees. Through personal attention for all students, the Averett University faculty prepares adult students for successful lives by encouraging them to excel in a professional environment. Averett University values academic freedom, spiritual growth and diversity among its adult student community.

Averett University’s adult degree programs are designed to help working adults further their education and earn an accredited degree in their chosen area of study. Averett University in Southern Virginia provides an accelerated format that makes it easy for adult students to earn their degree while continuing to work a full-time job and take care of their family. At Averett University, adult students can fulfill their academic objectives, maintain a career and extend learning outside the classroom.
